In Coimbatore, the Rotary E-Club of Metro Dynamix and Idhayangal Charitable Trust organized ‘Kidathon 2023,’ a walkathon aimed at raising awareness about type 1 diabetes among children. District Collector Kranti Kumar Pati flagged off the event, which saw scores of children under 15 walking around Race Course to educate the public about juvenile diabetes.
Krishnan Swaminathan, an endocrinologist and founder of Idhayangal Charitable Trust, highlighted the prevalence of type 1 diabetes among children, with five lakh affected in India, including 20,000 in Tamil Nadu. The lack of awareness among parents often leads to children failing to take necessary medication, resulting in lifelong complications, including kidney failure. The event emphasized the importance of awareness and proper medication for children to lead normal lives.

The Association of Physicians of India (API), with support from Lupin Pharmaceuticals, conducted a Walkathon at Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai to raise awareness about Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Predicted to become the third leading cause of death worldwide by 2030, COPD is linked to factors like smoking, environmental pollution, and occupational risks. A recent study revealed that one out of five diabetes patients in India experiences complications affecting small blood vessels, leading to kidney failure, blindness, or severe nerve damage. The study focused on managing diabetes after diagnosis, highlighting the struggle patients face in achieving desired control, resulting in high diabetes-related complications. The majority of patients had additional health issues like obesity, hypertension, and high cholesterol, indicating a higher risk of heart attacks. Tragic Incidents: Drownings and an Attack in Bihar
In separate incidents in Patna and Saran districts of Bihar, six individuals, including two minor brothers and two children, drowned. Tragedy struck as Saurabh and Sahil drowned while bathing in a pond in Khemnichak, Patna, and Sonali and Anuradha drowned in the Ganga at Ramdas Chak in Saran. Another minor boy drowned in Brahmapura pond in Patna. In Munger, a fatal attack occurred, claiming the lives of Chandan Jha and Rajnandan Jha, with the accused, Aashish, still at large.
